If you don't have something on your computer, get it. A firewall is a good isea as well. Norton Internet Security includes a firewall that works extremely well.

<snip> A firewall is a good isea as well. Norton Internet Security includes a firewall that works extremely well. {{FROM ADMIN: ON THE SUBJECT OF FIREWALLS . . . }}WHAT IS A 'FIREWALL'?A FIREWALL is either a software (most common for people on a home computer) or a hardware piece that goes between your computer and the outside world (ie: the Internet) to block unwanted access. WHY USE A FIREWALL?Two reasons. First, there are tons of evil programs wandering around the internet looking to sneak into your computer and read your information. Some not-so-nice folks have even set up entire computer networs that are designed to do nothing more than roam the internet, pinging on people's home computers, seeing what access they can gain and what info they can read. A good firewall blocks such access from the outside world and makes your computer seem invisible to such nefarious scans. The second reason to have a firewall is to block unwanted access FROM your computer TO the Internet. Yes, that's right, some of the programs on your computer are trying to access the 'net to trade data with the outside world. Some of these programs are not evil, and you would generally want them getting access to the world, such as your antivirus program when it automatically searches for virus definition updates. But sometimes you may have a piece of adware or spyware in your comp that is trying to send data to its host, and that's the kind of stuff a firewall can stop. In such cases, a firewall will NOT take the place of a good adware/spyware program, because the firewall will not remove the malware but can simply block its access. The malware may still be running in the background, and still slowing down your computer. The offending prog needs to be removed. Since you obviously WANT to have some kinds of access between your computer and the outside world, most firewalls allow you to configure which progs are allowed access. Most firewalls do this by alerting you of an attempted access and asking you if permission is granted. For programs that should always have access, you can save that prog's permission so the firewall doesn't ask you every time. If you have an "always on" Internet connection such as cable or DSL, whenever your computer is powered up it is available to the outside world and vulnerable to the evils waiting to get in or out. But even people using dialup 'net access will benefit from a firewall. One of the most popular and easiest to use FREE firewall software programs is "Zone Alarm" from Zone Labs. You can go to the Zone Labs website and download a free copy of Zone Alarm. To be fully protected from evil programs out on the 'net, a firewall should be used in addition to anti-virus and anti-spyware programs. As was mentioned, you can buy some security suites that combine all the programs, you can buy separate programs for each task, or you can find the free programs that provide these benefits. Zone Alarm is a great free firewall. If you don't have a firewall, I recommend Zone Alarm. I use it - wouldn't go on the 'net without it.
